Our Scientifically Proven Fuelings and Plans
OPTAVIA works because it’s simple and easy to follow. Our proven Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® jumpstarts your optimal weight journey. Five of your daily meals are OPTAVIA Fuelings. You’ll choose from more than 60 delicious, convenient, nutritionally interchangeable, scientifically-designed Fuelings. Your body will enter a gentle, but efficient fat-burning state, essential for losing weight. Each Fueling contains high-quality protein which helps retain lean muscle mass, and a patented probiotic, GanedenBC30®, which helps support digestive health. Our proprietary products and programs are based on more than 37 years of experience, have been used by more than 1 million Clients and recommended by more than 20,000 doctors since its founding. In addition to five Fuelings per day eaten every 2 to 3 hours, you’ll learn another healthy habit, how to make a lean and green meal for you and your family. When you know what optimal nutrition looks like, healthy eating becomes second nature.
Basic outline of the 5&1 plan
(which you will also see in the Optavia Guide)
- You will be eating
- 5 fuels (Optavia products)
- 1 lean/green (1 protein/3 veggies) every day
- There are snacks you can have EVERY DAY which are outlined in the Optavia Guide and are also listed on the All In One Food Guide
- You are allowed 1-2 healthy fats (HF) every day based on the protein you choose and you will see this in the Optavia Guide as well as the All In One Food Guide
- You are allowed 3 condiments each day. You will also see these food items listed on the All In One Food Guide (along with the description of what they classify as… lean, HF, condiment, etc)
- You will need to drink 100 oz of water every day to continue flushing out the toxins from your body, creating healthy elasticity in your skin, and helping with that satisfied feeling
How often you eat:::
You will want to eat 2-3 hours all throughout the day (3 is more reasonable to get you through your entire day). I highly recommend you set your phone alarm as a reminder with a friendly ring tone as it will be going off every 2-3 hours. This is an important step because THIS is what is going to get your metabolism moving in the right direction and working like an engine for your body. You do not want to go more than 3 hours without eating a fuel – or your lean/green meal. You will want to eat no later than 45 minutes from when you wake up, and within 3 hours of going to bed for your last fuel (keep in mind you can eat right before you go to bed as well – always make sure you get you 5 fuels in, even if you are not hungry as this is important for keeping your metabolism working at a high rate). All fuels are interchangeable so you can mix them up or eat the same fuel all day long if you choose.

- Example of MY day:
- 8 AM First fuel
- 10 AM Second fuel
- 1 PM Lean/Green (lunch)
- 4 PM Third fuel
- 7 PM Fourth fuel
- 10 PM Fifth fuel
- Since I stay up as late as 1 AM, I eat my last fuel late to ensure I’m still within the 3-hour window
- Also, during my day, I will have an approved snack which can be eaten at “any” time
- I can also eat my approved Healthy Fats (HF)/Condiments either with my lean and green, OR at any time throughout the day (you will know how many Healthy Fats you can have, and what they are, from your Optavia Guide or the All In One Food Guide). This is based on what protein you choose and how lean it is. The leaner the protein, the more Healthy Fats (HF) you can have
- Example of one of my 1 lean and 3 green meals:
- Turkey meatballs – 7 oz cooked (because they are very lean) – 1 lean (always weigh the food after it’s cooked, you will get more!)
- Organico Bella’s pasta (approved) sauce – ½ cup over the meatballs (approved on plan as a “green”/veggie – 1 green
- Parmesan Cheese – 2 TBL – 2 condiments
- Side of broccoli – ½ cup – 1 green
- Side of cauliflower – ½ cup – 1 green
- Or you can double/triple up on any greens – you do not have to eat 3 separate greens
- If you like to cook – there are MANY recipes which are delicious on the Live Right Facebook page under “Files” which are easy to follow and outlined with what they count as… 1 lean, 3 greens, condiments, HF, etc.
- ALSO – sometimes the first week can be challenging for people because they are changing their eating habits. If you would like (at any time on the plan) you can divide up your lean and green meal and have ½ for dinner, and ½ for lunch – however only 1 of the meals should take place as your 2-3 hour lean/green meal. If you eat half of it at another time, it can be eaten at any time of the day… between fuels or with a fuel.

The key to success is following the plan, keeping your metabolism working regularly, drinking your 100 oz of water every day, and getting your body into fat burn which will kick your weight loss into gear and keep it in gear as long as you stay in fat burn. That will show you a consistent loss of weight weekly as well as inches. This is a “fat-burning” plan so you should begin to see changes in the way your clothes fit and the scale pretty consistently. The first week people loose from 5-10 lbs depending on their size and then you should see a loss of 1-3 lbs each week thereafter. I’ve consistently lost 2 lbs every week for a few months… which has been awesome! But if I have a slow scale week, I still notice the inches coming off because I take measurements.

Optimal Weight 4&2&1 Plan®
The Optimal Weight 4&2&1 Plan is perfect for you if you want to continue eating all food groups or want a flexible meal plan to help you achieve a healthy weight. Four of your meals are OPTAVIA Fuelings. Choose from more than 60 delicious, nutritionally interchangeable and scientifically designed Fuelings. Every day you will also prepare two lean and green meals, and enjoy one healthy snack.
Transitioning from the 5 & 1 or 4 & 2 Plans to maintenance
Transition
Living the BeSlim® lifestyle
Once you’ve reached your weight-loss goal, it’s time to make the transition into lifelong healthier eating with the BeSlim® lifestyle.
The idea behind the Transition phase is to gradually increase your calorie intake over time, while re-introducing a wider variety of foods. During Transition, you incrementally increase your daily caloric intake by re-introducing a different food group each week (refer to page 21 of the Optavia Guide for more information). The actual number of calories you need after Transition to maintain your weight is individual and varies depending on factors such as height, weight, gender, age, and activity level.
Optimal Health 3&3 Plan®
Sustain your healthy weight with the Optimal Health 3&3 Plan®. This nutritionally balanced plan is easy to follow and consists of three balanced meals and three Optimal Health™ Fuelings each day. Eat one meal or Fueling every two to three hours as part of a healthy lifestyle. The Optimal Health 3&3 Plan is also great for anyone looking for a convenient way to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
We recommend that you contact your healthcare provider before starting and throughout your OPTAVIA weight loss journey, especially if you are taking medications (e.g., diabetes medications, high blood pressure medications, Coumadin (warfarin), lithium, thyroid medications etc.)
Do not use the OPTAVIA Program if you are pregnant. If you have a serious acute or chronic illness (e.g., heart attack, diabetes, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, anorexia, bulimia, etc.) do not use the OPTAVIA Program until your healthcare provider says you have recovered or that your condition is stabilized. The Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan TM is NOT appropriate for teens (13 to 18 years of age), sedentary older adults (65 years and older), nursing mothers, people with gout, some people with diabetes, and those who exercise more than 45 minutes per day. For special medical or dietary needs, refer to our program guides online.
NOTE: Rapid weight loss may cause gallstones or gallbladder disease for those at high risk. While adjusting to intake of a lower-calorie level and diet changes, some people may experience lightheadedness, dizziness or gastrointestinal disturbances. These usually are temporary.
